Heavyweight shopping days like Black Friday take the spotlight, as it should be. But don’t underestimate other hallmark events. They can be the opening to reach customers, too.

#1 Commemorate the end of daylight saving time 

About one-third of the world’s countries participate in daylight saving time. The majority of the United States and Canada turn the clock back an hour on the first Sunday in November — Nov. 3 this year. (European counterparts do so the last Sunday in October — Oct. 27 in 2024.) 

You could run a “daylight savings” sale, as many brands do. Or raise the bar and flex your creativity.

#2 Join the Election Day whirlwind 

The U.S. election season has bombarded Americans with partisan politics for months. So why do we advise Shopify brands to join the Election Day noise?   

Nov. 5 is a monumental day that touches your entire audience. Tap into the moment. 

Most brands should avoid wading into ideological waters — unless it’s the foundation of their being — so they don’t alienate customers. Run a one-day sale, suggesting subscribers indulge in themselves if they need a distraction from it all.   

You could also lighten the mood by focusing your newsletter on democratic ideals and processes. We’ve seen brands: 

  • Promote symbolic and patriotic items
  • Showcase “winning” products 
  • Ask subscribers to cast votes for the next new product idea
  • Donate partial sales proceeds to a civic-oriented non-profit

#3 Embrace Pink Friday to boost boutique sales

Four years ago, small businesses struggled with an unprecedented business climate thanks to the pandemic.  

The challenges gave rise to Pink Friday, which encourages consumers to start holiday shopping at boutiques and small businesses before scoping larger retailers. It happens Nov. 22, one week before Black Friday. 

So, if your Shopify store is a boutique, add Pink Friday to your marketing plans and November newsletter ideas. The Boutique Hub has a wealth of resources to assist.

  1. SSYS explains Pink Friday’s meaning. Though in its fourth year, Pink Friday hasn’t reached the status of universal understanding. Providing context is crucial for attracting shoppers.  
  2. The hero image sells the cause. No need to feature highly polished product photography. A team member posing with a spinner wheel aptly communicates that SSYS is a small business.

#4 Express gratitude on Thanksgiving

If an intense Black Friday marketing game plan is on the calendar, it’s tempting to sidestep Thanksgiving (Nov. 28). But we encourage giving it some thought. 

During the “Cyber 5” days of 2023 (Thanksgiving through Cyber Monday), Seguno customer Thanksgiving emails showed remarkable results. It was the only day that generated a revenue increase (17%) year over year.  

Include an exclusive offer or don’t. Either way, reflect on the holiday’s meaning. It’s the perfect opening to thank customers for their support.

#5 Run a Black Friday sales promotion 

Black Friday: the unofficial kickoff to the holiday shopping sprint. 

Yes, holiday shopping starts well before Thanksgiving. And yes, brands have taken liberties by running “early Black Friday” sales even before trick or treaters take to the streets. 

But the textbook definition of Black Friday — the Friday after Thanksgiving (Nov. 29) — still reigns as a dominant shopping day that annually breaks spending records.

If you do it no other time of year, scale your newsletter cadence with a multi-email campaign. One email won’t suffice when inboxes turn into a battleground for winning attention. 

The brand Tempo, for example, binds multiple messages with one design aesthetic to heighten brand reinforcement.

#6 Highlight your shop on Small Business Saturday 

If you passed on Pink Friday and Thanksgiving emails, Small Business Saturday (Nov. 30) is another chance to say thanks and remind people that your brand doesn’t run with the big dogs of retail.
